Queen Victoria - (a short tale)

Apparently when Queen Victoria was looking for an estate in Scotland she was travelling extensively up and down the west coast of Scotland and was in regular communication with her physician who was staying near Ballater. She told him how it rained constantly on the west coast and he wrote back regularly that the weather was still ‘fine’ here in Ballater. Eventually she headed east and as a result of this detour for better weather she bought the Balmoral estate…

On a more practical note the cottage lies east of the Grampian Highlands – in the “rain shadow” of the Cairngorms so it ‘can’ be drier (than the west coast!).
